The healthcare sector has the highest average retirement age in Belgium, according to a study by human resources group Acerta, reported by Sudinfo newspapers on Sunday.
In 2024, the average retirement age for workers in the healthcare and social assistance sector is 63.62 years.
The hospitality sector follows closely with an average retirement age of 63.57 years. The financial sector (63.55 years) and the chemistry, pharmacy, and energy sectors (63.31 years) also have relatively high retirement ages.
Since 2020, the average retirement age in healthcare has remained relatively stable, ranging from 63.71 years in 2020 to 63.62 years in 2024.
Currently, 84.2% of permanent contract workers in the healthcare sector are women. Among new workers in 2024, 83.16% are women and 16.4% are men. Only 20.77% of new workers in the sector are under the age of 25, while more than half are over the age of 35.
