A second person has been hospitalised in a serious condition.
Firefighters were called to a blaze at a social housing complex in Couillet, a district of Charleroi, at approximately 22:15 on Saturday. The hallway was engulfed in flames, and thick smoke spread throughout the building.
According to a judicial source, one person found deceased in their apartment was on respiratory support. A young woman was seriously injured and is receiving medical care.
The prosecutor’s office reported 64 residents evacuated, with 20 people hospitalised for mild or moderate poisoning.
Initial findings by an expert revealed three distinct fire sources in the entrance hall. The possibility of criminal activity is being considered, but investigations are ongoing to determine the exact origin of the fire. No suspects have been identified at this stage.
