Major General Aviator Geert De Decker will take command of the Air and Space Component on Thursday, the Belgian Ministry of Defence announced on Monday.

The Belgium Air Component is the air wing of the Belgian Armed Forces. Major General Aviator Thierry Dupont had led it since 2020.

A traditional military ceremony will be held on Thursday at Florennes Air Base to mark the change of command.

Geert De Decker has fighter pilot training and was part of the 31st Tiger Squadron at Kleine-Brogel. He participated in several operations in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

He then joined the United States, where he trained as a test pilot with the US Air Force to work on the F-16 Mid-Life Update programme.

In Belgium, Major General Aviator Geert De Decker was a military advisor to the Belgian Ambassador to NATO.

In 2015, he became commander of the 10th Tactical Wing, based at Kleine-Brogel. He was later appointed Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Training, before being promoted to Major General Aviator in 2023.
