A jury in North Dakota has ordered Greenpeace to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to the owner of an oil pipeline.
The environmental organisation was found guilty of defamation against Energy Transfer and organising a violent campaign against the company.
The case centres on significant protests against the construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline.
In 2016 and 2017, many people opposed the project, particularly because the pipeline crosses the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
Protesters feared contamination of their land and stood against the construction.
Energy Transfer claims that Greenpeace incited people against the company with a misleading campaign.
Previously, the Texas-based company sought $300 million from Greenpeace through a federal lawsuit, which was dismissed.
Energy Transfer then brought the case to a local court in North Dakota.
Critics have accused Energy Transfer of using the lawsuit to silence environmental activists.
