World Bank President Ajay Banga is pushing to lift the ban on funding nuclear energy. Banga has asked the board of directors of the world’s largest development aid funder to review its decades-old policy, he said at a meeting in Washington.
“The good news is the board has come together and said they are willing to discuss it,” Banga said on Thursday. He expects a decision to be made in 2026 when the World Bank presents a new energy policy proposal.
Last year, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), urged the World Bank to finance nuclear energy.
He argued that developing countries could use nuclear power to meet their energy needs.
