The Flemish Green Party, Groen, is advocating for a crisis tax on millionaires to fund additional government defence spending.

Groen leader Bart Dhondt argued on Radio 1 (VER) that it would be reckless to further erode social security while the wealthiest individuals remain exempt from additional taxation.

The federal government aims to reach an agreement by summer to increase defence spending to 2% of the gross domestic product.

Groen is concerned that the middle class and the most vulnerable will bear a disproportionate financial burden unless millionaires contribute.

Dhondt emphasised that targeting the wealthier population would balance the budget more effectively, suggesting that millionaires should demonstrate their patriotism by supporting the effort.

The Green Party’s proposal includes a progressive tax on individuals with assets of at least €2.5 million.

According to the Planning Bureau, this measure could generate approximately €2 billion annually.
