Twelve tunnels in Brussels are closed due to a technical problem on Monday morning. The cause has been identified and the tunnels are now beginning to reopen.

All tunnels longer than 300 meters were completely closed until 07:15, VRT reported. A technical problem caused the CCTV, automatic incident detection and fire detection systems to stop working and the passages were closed as a precaution.

The problem has since been resolved and Brussels Mobility is examining each tunnel individually before they are reopened.

The tunnels affected are Trone, Louise, Stephanie, Bailli, Loi, Rogier, Montgomery, Cinquantenaire, Porte de Hal, Reyers, Belliard and Annie Cordy.

The incident has caused heavy traffic jams across the city. The longest queues are between Koekelberg and Arts-Loi, on the E40 from Kraainem to Reyers and Montgomery and on the central ring road from Etterbeek to Montgomery.
