The US Department of Defence is considering withdrawing thousands of troops from Eastern Europe, according to NBC News, citing six government sources from the US and Europe.
These troops were deployed under President Joe Biden to protect Ukraine’s neighbouring countries after Russia’s large-scale invasion.
The Trump administration argues that the US is contributing disproportionately to European security.
The US government wants to redirect its focus to other important issues, such as the border with Mexico and countering China.
Additionally, Trump aims to reduce military spending. In 2022, Biden sent an additional 20,000 troops to Europe, some of whom Trump now wants to withdraw.
The exact numbers are not yet known, but it might involve as many as half of the troops. These troops are currently stationed in Romania and Poland.
The discussions about a partial withdrawal coincide with US efforts to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
European sources told NBC that the proposal could heighten fears among allies who see Russia as an increasing threat.
"The Russians will view a reduction of US troops as a weakening of deterrence, which will embolden them to interfere more throughout Europe," said Seth Jones of the Center for Strategic and International Studies to NBC.
The US currently has around 80,000 troops in Europe.
