Preparatory work to renovate the two E411 tunnels under the Carrefour Léonard will start on Monday evening on the Brussels Ring Road (R0), the Flemish Road and Traffic Agency announced on Friday.

The tunnel, which runs beneath the busy crossroad, is part of the Brussels Ring (R0) – the motorway that circles around the Capital Region. It will be closed every night between 21:00 and 05:30 (08:00 on Saturdays). Traffic on the E411 will be diverted via Groenendael and the Quatre Bras crossroads.

Work will include relocating cables and removing technical elements such as lighting and markings for fire-fighting systems. As one tunnel reopens, another will close partially in spring.

The closure of this tunnel at night comes in addition to the closure of the inner ring tunnel that is already in force. Traffic on the inner ring currently passes through the Léonard crossroads on the surface. Work initially planned for the daytime was postponed from November 2024 to April/May 2025.

This is when the bulk of the E411 tunnel renovation work will begin, with crews working day and night in the tunnel. Brussels-bound traffic on the E411 will be on one lane instead of two. The E411 and Ring tunnels will be completely closed from 21:00 to 05:30 (until 08:00 on Saturdays) until the end of 2025.

The slip road between the E411 and the ring for traffic coming from Waterloo towards Auderghem will also be closed in the evening and at night. The slip road in the other direction (Auderghem to Waterloo) will remain open to traffic.
