EU's support for Ukraine is 'unwavering', says Borrell in Kyiv

The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, assured Ukraine of "unwavering support" during his visit to Kyiv, the first by a high-ranking European official since Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.

"The clear objective of this visit is to express the European Union’s support for Ukraine – this support remains unwavering," Borrell told the press. He is set to leave his post next month.

Trump’s victory has raised concerns in Ukraine and Europe, fearing he might end the vital military and financial aid from Washington to Kyiv in its fight against the Russian invasion.

"Russia’s war has taken an immense human toll on Ukraine and its brave people. Ukraine remains determined to prevail and achieve a just and lasting peace," the EU foreign policy chief wrote on social media. "We must scale up and speed up our efforts to support Ukraine. Urgency is key. Time is measured in human lives."

During his campaign, Trump questioned the continuation of this support and suggested he could make a quick deal to end the war. "Nobody knows exactly what the new administration will do," Borrell said on Saturday, noting outgoing US President Joe Biden still has two months in office to make decisions.

"We must do more and faster: more military support, more training capabilities, more money, quicker deliveries, and allow strikes on the Russian enemy’s military targets on its territory," he urged.
