The Flemish employers’ organisation Voka has called Monday’s general strike “completely irresponsible and incomprehensible”.
Voka’s CEO, Hans Maertens, stated that the unions are undermining the country’s prosperity through such actions. He urged unions to choose negotiation and dialogue over protest and strikes.
The general strike is led by the socialist and Christian unions in opposition to the federal government’s plans. Voka argues that the proposed reforms are “absolutely necessary” and should have been implemented much earlier.
The reforms are needed to boost the competitiveness of Belgian companies and to stabilise the country’s social and economic systems. Voka warned that the measures might not even be sufficient but are essential for Belgium’s long-term health and prosperity.
The employers’ organisation also pointed to geopolitical challenges and the international reputational damage caused by the strike.
Maertens said the strike further pressures the competition position of businesses and harms the country’s international reputation. He emphasized the need for unity to secure a bright future for both the Flemish and European economies.
Voka has called on mayors to ensure that industrial zones remain accessible and to prevent blockades of business sites on Monday.
