The European Commission will announce in March "very concrete projects" related to critical Ukrainian materials labelled as European, the Vice-President of the European Executive Stéphane Séjourné confirmed on Wednesday, following Ukraine’s acceptance of a preliminary agreement on its minerals with the United States.
The European Union has had a Memorandum of Understanding with Ukraine on critical raw materials since 2021. Séjourné stated that it is time to implement this agreement, which is based on “win-win” conditions with the Ukrainian government. He made his remarks on the sidelines of a press briefing in Brussels.
"We already have several projects that can be labelled as European, some of which we can reveal as early as March," said Séjourné, referring to an upcoming plan announcement on the topic.
He mentioned a partnership project that could account for up to 10% of Europe's graphite consumption by 2030.
Ukraine produces several critical minerals, including manganese, titanium, and graphite, and claims to have one of the largest lithium resources in Europe.
