Residents of Paris voted in favour of making more streets car-free in a referendum held on Sunday.

Two-thirds of those who voted supported the initiative, despite a low voter turnout of only 4% of eligible voters.

A total of 500 streets will be made car-free, resulting in the removal of 10,000 parking spaces, which is 10% of the total parking availability.

Only 56,500 out of 1.391 million eligible voters participated in the referendum, equating to a turnout of just 4.06%. This turnout was lower than the 5.68% for the vote on tripling parking fees for SUVs and the 7.46% for the ban on e-scooters.

"This vote reaffirms our determination to continue sharing public space for the benefit of pedestrians and to make Paris greener," said Christophe Najdovski, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of green spaces.

The 500 new car-free streets are in addition to the 300 streets that were previously made car-free.
