The Federal Government intends to relax degree requirements for civil servants and also consider candidates’ skills and potential during recruitment.
At present, those wishing to apply for a public sector job must satisfy specific degree requirements. The dedicated website specifies the required degree for each position.
For instance, a specialist in accounting must hold a Master’s degree, while a general technical employee needs no degree at all.
Public Sector Minister Vanessa Matz (Les Engagés) aims for public services to adopt a broader perspective beyond just educational qualifications.
"The way people acquire skills is changing," her office explains. "This demands a more open and inclusive approach to public recruitment, focusing on actual skills and potential.”
This practice is already in place for ICT jobs, where experience and skills generally take precedence over formal degrees. "We see this trend gradually expanding to other sectors," Matz adds.
The job website and federal public services can initiate the relaxation of degree requirements, for example, when a recruitment procedure fails to yield the desired profile.
However, according to Matz, this flexibility has clear limits. "For protected professions, such as that of a doctor, a degree is still clearly required."
