A powerful earthquake on Tuesday in the Himalayan region of Tibet, south-west China, killed at least 126 people and caused many buildings to collapse, the local earthquake agency reported
The 'quake was felt as far away as neighbouring Nepal.
Videos broadcast by Chinese state television CCTV showed homes with walls ripped open, collapsed roofs, and stones littering the ground.
Other CCTV footage showed partially buried vehicles, and shoppers fleeing a convenience store as the 'quake knocked products off the shelves.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the township of Tingri, not far from the Sino-Nepalese border, at 9.05 a.m. (2.05 a.m. BST), according to China's national earthquake agency, CENC. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 7.1.
"A total of 126 dead and 188 injured was confirmed at 7 p.m. (12 p.m. BST) on Tuesday," the official China News Agency announced.
Surrounded by mountains at a high altitude, Tingri Township is located in a sparsely developed area. The epicentre was around 370 km south-west of the regional capital, Lhasa, according to CENC data.
The authorities have sent emergency aid, including cotton tents, quilts and other equipment to cope with the harsh weather conditions, according to New China News.
