Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday called on members of the Contact Group for the Defence of Ukraine to provide Ukraine with more anti-aircraft systems.
Stoltenberg made the call at a video conference of the contact group, which comprises nearly 50 countries, Nato said.
The alliance also reported him as describing the series of deadly missile strikes on Ukraine as a clear reminder of the ferocity of Russia’s illegal war.
The US-led Defence Contact Group on Ukraine is responsible for coordinating the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Wednesday’s meeting was organised after a missile fell on Tuesday in NATO-member Poland, killing two men.
The Nato chief said the incident was probably caused by a Ukrainian air defence system missile fired to defend Ukrainian territory against Russian cruise missiles, allaying fears of escalation, even though Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky maintains the missile was Russian.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas had already called on Wednesday for more “military, humanitarian and financial support” for Ukraine.
