The French police on Wednesday killed a man with knives who had attacked a group of police officers in the northeast of the Paris region.

The knife-wielding man was sitting at a bus stop with a knife in both hands when he "lunged" at a police squad "without saying a word" in Dugny (Seine-Saint-Denis, in the northeast of Paris) at around 07:00 on Wednesday morning.

He was killed by police, AFP learned from the Paris police headquarters. One of the officers first used a "stun gun" in vain. Then, another officer drew his weapon and wounded the man in the chest. Despite this intervention of the emergency services, the man died.

It is unclear what the man's motifs were. The territorial security of Seine-Saint-Denis has been called in to investigate, France 24 reported. The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) has also been called on, as is customary when a police officer fires his service weapon.

A total of 36 people died in 2023 during a police intervention, according to the latest figures released by the IGPN.

The attack comes several days after one person was killed and two police officers were seriously injured in a knife attack in Mulhouse, near the German border.
