On Wednesday, a dozen French-language radio stations are joining forces under the banner of “Radio Ukraine”, a project to unite all radio stations in an act of solidarity with Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees.
Radio stations participating in the project will emit special programs about the situation in Ukraine, including interviews, testimonies from refugees, fundraising drives and other benevolent actions.
As part of the campaign, the 12 participating radio stations will donate all their earnings from publicity for the day towards charities Médecins sans Frontières and Belgian charity 12-12 Consortium, who are both actively engaged in projects in Ukraine.
Radio stations Bel RTL, Chérie, Classic 21, DH Radio, Fun Radio, Musiq3, Nostalgie, NRJ, Radio Contact, La Première, Tipik and VivaCité will all participate in the joint event.
Radio Ukraine will even have its own common sound design created especially for the occasion. The campaign has created TV adverts, social media videos and other campaigns focused around the motto of “Lend an ear to lend a hand.”
Gilles Van Moortel, coordinator of the 12-12 Consortium, stated that these initiatives had rallied Belgians to the cause of the Ukrainian people.
“Since the beginning of the crisis affecting the Ukrainian population,” the coordinator said, “we have witnessed an enormous outpouring of solidarity.”

Thanks to wide-scale publicity campaigns, the Belgian charity has been able to raise an unprecedented amount of donations. The charity has collected close to €18 million since the start of the war.
“Thanks to this solidarity, humanitarian teams are coming to the aid of women, children and men in Ukraine and neighbouring countries,” Van Moortel said.
It is hoped that the 23 March radio event will help reach out to the French-speaking community in Ukraine and further rally the cause.
On 17 March, Flemish radio and television stations took part in a similar action to raise funds for the 12-12 Consortium. TV stations VTM, Play4 and Een took part in a TV marathon, broadcasting for 15 hours from the Groenplaats in Antwerp on behalf of the charity.
