From 22:00 today, lighting on all of Wallonia’s national roads will be reduced to 30% brightness during non-peak hours, SPW Infrastructure announced in a press release. This measure, requested by the Walloon government, will help reduce the region’s energy consumption and expenditure.
Lighting will be significantly dimmed between 22:00 and 05:00, however, lighting will remain on at 100% brightness in the early winter evening and in the early hours of the morning to cover peak hours.
Only motorway lighting which has already been converted to LED will be dimmed. This amounts to around 50,000 lighting sources out of a total of 72,000. The remaining 22,000 lighting points will remain on at 100% pending their conversion to LED.
The region hopes that this move will lead to big savings during the difficult winter period.

Wallonia expects that dimming the lights will economise over 4,000-megawatt hours on an annual basis, which corresponds to a monetary saving of over €620,000. This money will be added to the savings already made by turning off lighting in the central island of motorways in effect since 21 September.
In total, Wallonia has saved nearly €1 million per year as a result of energy savings on its motorways and national roads.
