The Belgian province of Walloon Brabant experienced the largest drop in GDP across the EU in 2021, Eurostat reports.

On Monday, the statistical office released figures detailing the continent's economic growth per region or province in 2021. When compared to 2020, Walloon Brabant's GDP declined by 2.4%.

The figure makes it one of the only three provinces across the EU to have experienced a decrease in 2021.

The other regions were the French overseas department of Mayotte and the Austrian region of Tyrol, while all other European areas experienced a growth in GDP.

Eurostat's findings could not attribute the Walloon Brabant's loss of GDP to any specific reason but did lay some blame on the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially as the province's GDP had fallen by 12% since 2019.

All other regions in Belgium, however, experienced a growth in GDP in 2021, with the provinces of Flemish Brabant and West Flanders recording a 7.6% and 7% increase respectively.
