OKRA, the largest senior citizen association in Brussels and Flanders, has launched a petition to protest a price rise in senior rail tickets for those over 65 years old.
All SNCB ticket prices increased on 1 February, including a rise in Senior Tickets for over 65s from €7.20 to €7.80. OKRA is opposing SNCB's plans to now convert the fare to a discount, claiming that a discount on general tickets will still be more expensive than the current fixed senior's price.
"With the current senior fare, you can travel all over the country for €7.80 after 09:00, there and back," OKRA argued. "The price will be higher if there is a 40% discount for senior citizens instead. Longer train journeys may even be up to two to three times more expensive."

SNCB may set a maximum fare for seniors but this has not yet been communicated, the association stated. OKRA, therefore, is calling for the current fare to be retained. They are also asking for the senior fare to be extended to bus, tram and metro tickets across the country.
