After a few days of milder temperatures and some rare sunshine, Belgium has lost sight of an early spring this year. Light, melting snow is expected in several parts of the country on Thursday, including Brussels.

One week ago, temperatures soared to around 20°C in Belgium. However, this working week is looking very different. Unstable maritime polar air will pass over the country, the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) said. This is accompanied by a height trough, often tied to strong upward movements, frequent showers and a temporary increase in wind.

Thursday will start sunny with some clouds in the centre of the country, however, this will shift by noon, replaced with occasional winter showers from the west. "There is also a chance of thunder," the RMI warned.

Maximum temperatures will range from 4°C in the High Ardennes to 7°C or 8°C in Brussels, meaning snow will likely melt quickly. Showers will continue into the evening and night, especially in the west of the country and in the Ardennes, where they will take on a wintry character. A thin layer of snow may form again in the High Fens and Eastern Cantons, as temperatures will drop to near freezing.

Weekend weather

On Friday and in the weekend, the altitude trough will move to the east. However, it will remain cloudy with a few showers during the day.

"In the High Ardennes, the showers will take on a wintry character and there will be snow in the morning that will remain," the RMI noted. The coast will see sunny spells in the afternoon.

Saturday will start out grey with patches of freezing fog. Later on, the clouds will clear, especially in the Ardennes and along the coast. Elsewhere, it may remain grey. It will be dry with highs between 3°C and 8°C.

More local haze and freezing fog are on the cards for Sunday morning in most of the country. However, during the day it will become sunny, with maximum temperatures between 5°C and 9°C.
