A newborn baby was found dead in a garden in the Groenveld district in the Flemish municipality of Steenokkerzeel, just outside of the Brussels-Capital Region.
The baby was reportedly discovered after a telephone tip from a person involved. The Public Prosecutor's Office and lab are on-site for investigation.
The police were reportedly called to the Groenveld district in Steenokkerzeel early on Friday. The newborn baby was found in the garden, various media reported. This was confirmed by Steenokkerzeel mayor Kurt Ryon to Belga News Agency.
"I cannot and may not give any further information," Ryon said. "The Halle-Vilvoorde Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation and will go to the scene with a forensic examiner and the lab."
It is not clear whether anyone has been arrested. The police are reportedly looking for several members of the family living in the house.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Halle-Vilvoorde is not commenting on the case for now.
