The status of unemployment legislation for artists remains under active discussion within the government, according to Employment Minister David Clarinval.
Speaking during a plenary session of the Chamber on Thursday, Clarinval noted that given the unique nature of artists’ employment status, the discussion on how to apply unemployment reform measures to artists is ongoing.
The proposed legislation is currently being reviewed by inter-cabinet groups.
On Wednesday, L’Echo newspaper reported that the time limitation on unemployment benefits, proposed by the minister, could potentially end the special status of artists. This news has sparked reactions from the artistic community, opposition parties, and even the co-governing Les Engagés party.
In response, Clarinval reiterated the government’s agreement on Thursday. He said the previous government’s reforms regarding certain exceptions for artists would remain unchanged. However, he questioned whether the status of artists should still be linked to unemployment benefits.
Aurore Tourneur, leader of Les Engagés, seemed reassured by Clarinval’s statements. She welcomed the assurance that the special status for artists would not be compromised and pledged support, provided there is no regression.
On the contrary, the opposition expressed dissatisfaction. François De Smet (DéFI) remarked that except for Tourneur, Clarinval had not reassured many people with his response.
