After severing diplomatic ties with Belgium last week, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has now banned all Belgian aid to Rwandan organisations.
Belgian projects in Rwanda will become illegal starting this Friday, according to De Standaard.
Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot and the Belgian development agency Enabel are currently assessing the full implications of the ban.
"All Rwandan and international NGOs, religious organisations, and charitable institutions based in Rwanda will be prohibited from cooperating with Belgium or any Belgian-linked entities," warned Kigali. This ban is effective "immediately," and non-compliant organisations will be dissolved.
Financial transactions with the Belgian government and related institutions will also be prohibited.
Sources close to the matter indicate that the ban specifically affects Enabel projects, Belgian-supported NGOs, and Belgian universities.
Organisations such as the Belgian Red Cross, 11.11.11, Plan International, and Vétérinaires Sans Frontières are among those operating in Rwanda.
