Belgium's German-speaking Community welcomed a record number of tourists last year, Belga News Agency reports.
According to figures released on Thursday by local Tourism Minister Isabelle Weykmans, the region registered 547,000 overnight stays in 2022: more than twice as many compared to the previous year (221,000).
Weykmans also noted that the number of tourist accommodation establishments has risen rapidly over the last few years, from 283 in 2018 to 458 last year. The number of holiday homes grew especially quickly, almost doubling (from 191 to 369) over the same period.
"If we look at the figures per month, we see that the months of July and August attract more tourists," Weykmans said. "In that period, customers also stay longer on average. The tourist destination of eastern Belgium offers attractive infrastructure, but also a wide variety of activities and quality accommodation."
