Homeless people in Brussels remain entitled to social help until the end of February, Bruzz reported on Friday.
The regional government first announced a special plan for the month of January, providing homeless people with an additional 160 allocated places in social shelters. These institutions are equipped with sanitary facilities, hot meals and a place to sleep, and are accessible 24 hours a day.
Recent developments see emergency social centre Bruss’Help set up an extra 40 shelter rooms in addition to extending the previous agreements until 28 February. These spots will be managed by the Ukrainian Voice aid organisation. In addition, national railway company SNCB and Brussels transport company MIVB are both opening up underground stations under 0°C for the homeless.
The Brussels Parliament have also approved a proposal to designate 1% of all social housing to the homeless, to provide them with a permanent place to live. The current waiting time for social housing properties stands at 12 years on average, and its constant growth continues to represent a problem for aid organisations seeking to find solutions.
