Leaders of the European Union (EU) Member States will gather in Brussels on Thursday 6 March, for an 'extraordinary' EU summit. As always, security measures will impact mobility in the city.

A Special European Council meeting is being held in the European Council buildings on Rue de la Loi to discuss continued support for Ukraine and European defence contributions. This was also at the heart of the informal Egmont retreat of 3 February. EU leaders will be attending, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been invited.

"As during the previous summits, the mayor and police of Brussels will minimise disruptions in your neighbourhood whilst guaranteeing the security of Heads of State, citizens and goods," the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police noted in a statement.

"Traffic disruptions are to be expected. We advise you to use public transport," police said.

Security perimeter

The security perimeter includes the Schuman roundabout, Rue Froissart from number 101 to 143, Rue de la Loi between the Schuman roundabout and the Residence Palace, and Rue de la Loi between the Schuman roundabout and Boulevard Charlemagne. The area will be closed from 11:00.

Only authorised people can enter this zone on foot. Residents and people working in the area must show their access badge and identity card. A pass can be obtained via the police website.

"No deliveries will be possible, and no rubbish bags, bicycles or terraces may be placed on public roads within this security perimeter. For security reasons, all building windows must be closed."

Only local traffic will be allowed on Rue Archimède between Rue Stevin and the Schuman roundabout, Avenue de Cortenbergh between Rue Stevin and the Schuman roundabout (limited access during escorts), Rue de la Loi between Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée and the Schuman roundabout, Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée, Avenue d'Auderghem between Rue de la Loi and the Schuman roundabout, Rue Breydel, Rue Froissart between Rue Juste Lipse and Rue Belliard, and Rue Juste Lipse. These areas are accessible without a pass.

Parking for all kinds of vehicles will be forbidden within the security perimeter, in the streets where only local traffic is allowed, on the routes taken by the delegations, on Chaussée d'Etterbeek between Rue Belliard and Rue Van Maerlant, on Rue Van Maerlant and Rue Belliard, between Chaussée d'Etterbeek and Avenue d'Auderghem.

Disruption of traffic and public transport

The EU Summit will affect road traffic and public transport. The Reyers-centre tunnel will be closed to traffic from 10:00 on Thursday 6 March.

Brussels' public transport operator STIB confirmed that the Schuman metro station at the heart of the EU institutions will remain open but that entrances 6 (Rue Froissart), 7 and 8 (to Rue Archimède and Schuman) will be closed from 09:30. Entrances 4 (Residence Palace) and 5 (Justus Lipsius) will be closed from 07:00. The entrances to the railway station (Berlaymont side) will remain open.

"At the request of the police, the station may be completely inaccessible at certain times," STIB warned. Meanwhile, bus lines 59, 60 and 80 will be rerouted locally around Place Jourdan, and lines 27 (towards Luxembourg) and 36 (towards Maelbeek) will be rerouted around the Froissart stop.
