An unsolicited visit this week by a US delegation to Greenland is putting “unacceptable pressure” on the Kingdom of Denmark, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday.

The US delegation is to be led by Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, and includes National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. From Thursday to Saturday, they will be in Greenland, where they are to visit a US military base and attend a dogsled race.

The autonomous Danish territory has been the focus of increasing attention from US President Donald Trump. On Monday, Trump claimed the controversial visit was in response to an invitation, but he did not specify who had extended it.

The visit comes at a time when Greenland is still without a government following parliamentary elections on 11 March.

Both the outgoing government of the autonomous territory and the Danish authorities deny inviting the Americans to visit.

“We cannot organise a private visit with official representatives from another country,” Prime Minister Frederiksen told the press. “The pressure being put on Greenland and Denmark in this situation is unacceptable, and we will resist it,” she added.

The outgoing government of Greenland announced in a statement on Facebook that it had “not sent any invitations for visits, private or official.”

“The current government is a transitional administration awaiting the formation of a new coalition, and we have asked all countries to respect this process,” the statement read.
