British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has done irreparable damage to his country’s ties with Greece after accidentally smashing one of the Elgin Marbles during a museum visit.
Already subject to a controversial diplomatic spat over ownership, the Elgin or Parthenon Marbles currently reside in the British Museum. During an official visit to the London institution on Monday by Rishi Sunak, disaster struck.
Sunak was told by one of his communications advisors to pose next to one of the most ornate sculptures so that he could tweet a photo of him looking contemplative and statesmanlike.
Unfortunately for the UK leader, the sculpture toppled as soon as he got near it and smashed into a hundred smaller pieces when it hit the floor.
“Oh shit! Oh shit! Oh shit! Should we just run away? Maybe we can tell people that an immigrant snuck in here and smashed it up,” Sunak was heard to say by a group of French tourists in the nearby gallery.
After failing to piece the priceless artefact back together with chewing gum and duct tape, Sunak and his cronies have decided to go on the offensive, cancelling a planned meeting with Greece’s prime minister and declaring that “ancient art is the enemy of the people”.
The prime minister has since awarded a lucrative multi-million-pound contract to a Conservative Party donor to install guardrails around the museum’s priceless treasures.
