Negotiations between the EU’s 27 member states, Ukraine and Moldova are set to begin on Tuesday, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU announced today.

European Ministers, gathered at the Council, officially established the negotiation framework for both countries. On the agenda for 25 June are two intergovernmental conferences (ICGs) to take place in Luxembourg. At 15:30 an ICG will take place with Ukraine, followed by one at 18:00 with Moldova.

The Council’s official decision follows a principal agreement reached among the ambassadors of the 27 Member States last week. The EU originally gave the green light in December 2023 to the opening of accession negotiations with the two countries. However, a framework for these negotiations still had to be developed.

Ukraine originally applied to join the EU days after the Russian invasion in February 2022. Moldova applied a month later, in March 2022.
