The World Health Organization (WHO) launched its 2025 Ukraine Emergency Appeal on Tuesday, seeking $68.4 million (around €66 million) for the Central European country.

February 24 will mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Due to the ongoing conflict,12.7 million people urgently require humanitarian aid, according to the WHO. The appeal targets three million people in critical need of healthcare.

Instability, damage to healthcare facilities and equipment, doctor shortages, depleted medical supplies, insufficient personnel, and limited access to hospitals and pharmacies have severely affected healthcare, WHO said. The public health impact of the war is highly concerning, especially with public funds being redirected to military expenditure, it added.

“Looking ahead to 2025, we remain focused on maintaining and strengthening essential health services in Ukraine,” said Hans Kluge, WHO’s Regional Director for Europe.

The WHO’s response strategy aims to ensure the availability of necessary medical services and trauma care in critical areas, while improving coordination among public health partners.

WHO strives to guarantee access to emergency and trauma care, enhance public health surveillance, and support the swift recovery of the health system, Mr Kluge explained.
