The Dutch Minister of Asylum and Migration, Marjolein Faber, from the far-right PVV, has refused to sign a proposal for a royal honour for five individuals who have worked for asylum seekers and refugees.

Sources in The Hague confirmed her refusal following a report by De Telegraaf. Faber argues that honouring these individuals contradicts her policy.

Nominations for royal honours are reviewed by the Advisory Council for Civil Orders, which then advises the relevant minister. According to the website of the Netherlands Chancellery of Honours, such advice carries significant weight. A minister must present “well-founded arguments” to deviate from the recommendations.

Faber cannot independently block the already approved nominations. If she cannot reach an agreement with the Advisory Council, the cabinet will decide. The Council can also approach another minister for a signature.

“Royal honours are for society and are requested by members of society,” commented CDA leader Henri Bontenbal on social media. “Does everything have to be politicised? Minister Faber is crossing the line of decency here. Where are the values and norms of this cabinet?”

Conversely, PVV leader Geert Wilders expressed support for his minister on social media. “Why should we reward people who help to pamper asylum seekers with a royal honour? Great action by Faber.”
