Almost 200,000 Russian troops have been "liquidated" since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year, according to a recent official Ukrainian estimate.

The assessment, which was published by the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces early on Tuesday morning and reported by The Kyiv Independent, claims that Russia's "total combat losses" amounted to 191,420 troops, including 460 soldiers over the past 24 hours.

It is currently unclear whether the Ukrainian estimate refers exclusively to Russians who were killed or to those who were killed or wounded.

In addition to the enormous casualty rate, Ukraine further claimed that Russia has lost vast quantities of equipment over the past year, including 3,701 tanks, 308 airplanes, and 294 helicopters.

Significant losses

The Ukrainian assessment came just hours after the US claimed that Russia has suffered 100,000 casualties since December, including more than 20,000 deaths in the failed eastern offensive.

In comments reported by the Associated Press, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that half of the Russians killed were members of the notorious Wagner Group, a mercenary firm led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Kirby claimed that the Wagner's soldiers are "thrown into combat and without sufficient combat or combat training, combat leadership, or any sense of organisational command and control."

Earlier this month, leaked Pentagon documents showed that US intelligence believes that Russia has suffered 189,500-223,000 total casualties since the start of the war, including 35,500-43,000 killed.

The assessments, which were compiled in February by the US Defence Intelligence Agency, also estimated that Ukraine has suffered 124,500-131,000 total casualties over the same period, including 15,500-17,500 killed.

Such estimates are significantly higher than both Russia's and Ukraine's own official assessments of their respective casualty rates.

Last December, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claimed that 10,000-13,000 Ukrainian troops had died in combat.

The last official Russian estimate of its own casualty rate came last September, when Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed.
