The Belgian Council of State on Wednesday dismissed an appeal by Emir Kir against the Brussels government’s decision to organise new elections in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode on 9 February 2025.
Saint-Josse-ten-Noode is one of Brussels' 19 municipalities. On 19 November, the results of the local election on 13 October were annulled by the Brussels Regional Court due to "irregularities" with proxy votes that could have influenced the allocation of seats.
A re-election is supposed to be held within 50 days of the annulment (in this case, 5 January 2025). But the region opted for 9 February because the commune would not be prepared to hold an election by that date.
Outgoing mayor Emir Kir appealed the set date in this context. "We do not accept being strung along for days on end," he said. Kir's Liste du Bourgmestre won the elections with 50.5% of the vote – one of the largest increases in vote-share in the country.
His appeal was rejected and the elections will go ahead in February.
