People who own solar panels in an apartment building in Flanders will now be able to “sell” the electricity thus produced to other residents, Flemish energy regulator VREG announced on Thursday.

Until then, it was only possible to share the electricity from solar panels on the same site for free.

The new protocol now allows the sale of self-generated energy within a building.

In practical terms, the owner or condominium association of a residential or mixed-use building will have the possibility to sell the electricity produced by their solar panels to other customers in the building.
