Local police in Belgium have been instructed to observe “active vigilance” following the outburst of violence in Israel and the reprisals in the Gaza Strip, Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden announced on Monday.
The level of threat in the country is constantly being assessed by the security services, as are potential targets. Based on the analysis already carried out, police zones are being called upon to exercise active vigilance, which involves, for example, calling in extra staff and adapting patrol patterns, the Interior Minister explained.
Jewish schools and places of worship will be monitored more closely, she said, adding that security measures put in place for Jewish institutions will be maintained and, if necessary, additional ones will be taken.
The Minister said she was shocked by “the terrorist attacks in Israel.”
“We share the concerns of the Jewish community in our country,” she said.
