The Flemish Parliament's Ethics Committee on Wednesday threw out a complaint lodged against Vlaams Belang parliamentarian Filip Dewinter by Groen party leader Mieke Schauvliege.

Late last year, Ms. Schauvliege had filed the complaint about Dewinter and his alleged contacts with a Chinese spy, Shao Changchun. A report regarding their connection had been leaked by State Security in 2018, but no criminal activities were found at that time.

However, media sources suggested that Dewinter, who is also the Deputy Speaker of the Flemish Parliament, had managed to procure 10,000 face masks through Changchun in 2020, a claim Dewinter denied.

No decision was reached at a first meeting of the Ethics Committee on whether the case would be declared admissible. State Security was then contacted for further information.

In response, State Security sent a brief letter to Committee Chairperson Liesbeth Homans.

The letter contained little concrete evidence, so the Committee concluded that there were insufficient grounds to address the complaint, and deemed it inadmissible.
