Flemish parties have called unanimously on the authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to halt the execution of Belgian-Congolese military expert Jean-Jacques Wondo, accused of being the mastermind behind a failed May 2024 coup in Kinshasa.
A military court in Kinshasa sentenced Wondo and 37 others to death in September last for their involvement in the attempted coup, led by General Christian Malanga on 19 May last year. On Monday, the DRC's military appeal court upheld the death sentence.
Wondo has always maintained his innocence..
On Wednesday, the Flemish parties voted in favour of a resolution, initiated by Groen, calling on the Congolese authorities to stop the execution and work towards the complete and official abolition of the death penalty.
They also asked the Flemish government to use all possible means to urge Congo not to carry out the execution.
