The Brussels health authority Vivalis is urging people to check their vaccination status before going on holiday and to get vaccinated if necessary.

Several popular ski destinations, including Austria, Switzerland and Italy are currently undergoing a measles epidemic.

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp has listed all countries affected by the epidemic on its website wanda.be, which includes the United Kingdom, as well as countries in Asia and Africa.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection transmitted through the air. The most common symptoms are fever and red spots on the skin. Children under 10 years old are particularly at high risk.

Vivalis advises adults to check their vaccination status and that of their children. For very young children, a vaccine can be given from 6 months of age.

"A double vaccination provides permanent protection against this very contagious disease," states the health authority.
