France has been renamed Belgians' most popular holiday destination, with almost one-third of all Belgians' trips abroad being to their country's southern neighbour.
According to a recent report by Statbel, Belgium's official statistics office, Belgians took a total of nearly 5 million trips to France last year: a figure equivalent to 31.1% of all trips abroad.
Spain proved to be the second most popular foreign tourist destination (12.1%), followed by the Netherlands (10.7%).
Morocco was the most popular vacation spot outside the EU (2.3%), followed closely by Turkey and the UK.
More than a quarter (26.5%) of all Belgians' trips were taken within their own country's borders, making Belgium the second most popular holiday destination overall.
The study also found that nearly 4 in 10 Belgians (38%) did not spend at least one night away on holiday last year. Employed people (72%) and students (69%) travelled the most, while retired people (45%) and the unemployed (38%) were the least likely to go on vacation.
In total, 21.8 million trips were taken by Belgians last year – only a million fewer than before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019. On average, Belgians spent €1,115 each on holidays.
