Valérie Glatigny has resigned as the Wallonia-Brussels Federation's Minister for Higher Education due to an upcoming medical operation.
"I am stepping down after four years in office," Glaitgny announced on Thursday, citing health reasons. "The required period of rest is incompatible with managing my nine ministerial portfolios."
Her party, the French-speaking liberals MR, will announce Glatigny's replacement on Friday morning. "I know that the succession will be assured," she stated, promising "to facilitate the passing of the torch."
In response, MR's party leader Georges-Louis Bouchez thanked Glatigny for her “excellent work,” as she had been in charge of Francophone universities during the outbreak of Covid-19.
Her time in office was marred by student protests, who criticised her handling of the pandemic, as well as the subsequent university reform.
Nonetheless, she remains popular within her party as Bouchez promised that "Valérie will be a major asset for MR" at next year's elections.
