The maintenance of all Flemish infrastructure, such as bridges, roads and dykes, is projected to require €10.66 billion over the next decade, according to a report by the Department of Mobility and Public Works as reported in De Tijd.

Almost a quarter of infrastructure in Flanders is at the end of its economic life and no longer meets quality requirements. The report noted that it will only be able to remain operational through significant funding.

An estimated amount exceeding €4.5 billion has been allocated to maintain bridges, tunnels and viaducts. The upkeep of water-related infrastructure such as dykes, dams and locks is projected at around €3 billion, while an additional €2 billion is needed for roads.

When including the replacement cost for De Lijn's fleet, the total budget required stands at €10.66 billion. The report stressed that the situation will be untenable if changes are not made to the budget. Even with a higher budget, unless additional funds are set aside for regular maintenance, it will be impossible to ensure the preservation of all infrastructure.
