After years of renovation work, the Neptunium swimming pool in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek will reopen from Monday 18 September.
The swimming pool was built in 1953 but was in need of renovations to improve the building's energy value and guarantee current safety and hygiene standards. The renovations started in 2017, but did not go smoothly and even resulted in the reopening being postponed several times.
The roof, for example, had to be replaced and the contractors encountered a number of unpleasant surprises, such as asbestos and waterproofing problems, Bruzz reports. As a result, the swimming pool was closed for six years.
With the reopening on 18 September, 13 of the 15 municipal swimming pools in Brussels will be open. The Ixelles swimming pool remains closed, while the Victor Boin swimming pool in Saint-Gilles also closed at the end of April for maintenance works that are expected to take about three years.
During the official opening, a variety of activities will be offered, such as aqua gym sessions, scuba diving, underwater hockey, demonstrations, a synchronised swimming show and guided tours of the renovated facilities.
Food trucks, music and creative workshops will also be offered outside on Place de Houffalize.
