About 1,500 people gathered in the Bruly forest, in Couvin, for a rave party over the weekend.
Party-goers were not only Belgian residents, but also came from the Netherlands and France.
Tensions were high on Saturday evening, Claudy Noiret, the Mayor of Couvin who visited the scene said. One police vehicle sustained damage.
By Sunday morning, hundreds of people remained at the site. With only about twenty police officers available for duty, the city’s mayor permitted the gathering to continue until midday.
The authorities hope participants, who initially planned to stay until Monday morning, will cooperate. Additional federal police support is expected.
