The new leader of Les Engagés party, Yvan Verougstraete, expressed full support on Monday for Mouvement Reformateur Brussels Chairman David Leisterh in his efforts to form a new regional government.
Speaking on Bx1, Verougstraete also said his centre-right party was ready to back a "coherent" budget proposal put forward by the outgoing Brussels government, led by Minister-President Rudi Vervoort (Parti Socialiste, PS).
“I am pleased that the PS and Vooruit are insisting on having a budget," he said. "It’s crucial that measures are taken in this current critical situation. If the budget is coherent, we support it because we have always been solution-oriented,” said Mr Verougstraete.
While a minority government, which the MR's national and regional chairpersons, Georges-Louis Bouchez and David Leisterh, are working on, is not ideal, it is still feasible, he noted, citing France as an example.
He also reiterated his strong support for Leisterh, emphasising that all parties, including the PS, recognise that Brussels voters have opted for change.
“The MR won the elections, and David Leisterh should be the Prime Minister," Mr. Verougstraete added. "Some, like Ecolo, remain hesitant. We have been trying to find a solution for months, and I hope for more goodwill to achieve it.”
