One person died in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in Rue Gisbert Combaz Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles on Wednesday morning, the Brussels Fire Service confirmed.
A huge plume of smoke could be seen far above Brussels Midi/South station, as shown by images circulating on social media. The fire brigade was quickly at the scene and easily got the fire under control.
"Unfortunately one person died, four people with smoke inhalation were transferred to hospital and six people were treated on site," Brussels Fire Service spokesperson Walter Derieuw said.
Everyone else, including several pets, in the apartment building could be brought to safety. However, the entire building has been declared uninhabitable, he added. "The Mayor and the municipality are in charge of rehousing and psychological support for the inhabitants."
