In an open letter sent to Belga News Agency, former Belgian Prime Minister and current Member of the European Parliament, Elio Di Rupo, delivers a scathing critique of US President Donald Trump.
Di Rupo condemns the pressure from Washington on European companies to abandon their diversity policies, calling it “blackmail” and an “insult” to European values.
“Dear Donald, you are a dangerous ignoramus. For the United States. And for the rest of the world,” begins the letter, in which the former Belgian Prime Minister accuses Trump of displaying “contempt” for the fundamental principles upheld by the European Union: freedom, equality, and dignity.
He reproaches the US president for trying to “impose his narrow vision of the world” through threats directed at European companies.
In Europe, “every citizen has their place, regardless of their origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability,” the socialist politician stresses. Anti-discrimination policies “correct injustices,” “give everyone a chance.”
“They change lives,” he adds.
Di Rupo also criticises Trump’s contradictions, noting he claims to be “a fervent defender of peace, yet threatens, conditions, and imposes.” He points out that Trump “had promised peace in Ukraine within 24 hours” but “is now humiliated by Putin.”
“You create a show. Noise. Emptiness. You defend a world of domination, submission, and injustice,” Di Rupo asserts.
He concludes his letter by reiterating the "determination" of Belgium and Europe to defend their core values, stressing that “true strength does not impose, it listens, builds, and elevates.”
