A man carrying a firearm near Clémenceau metro station in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht fled from the local police on Tuesday night, Belga News Agency reports. He is still on the run.

This was first reported by Het Laatste Nieuws and later confirmed by local police.

The man got out of a vehicle at around 21:50 on Tuesday and was carrying a "long weapon", presumably an automatic rifle. Police were on the scene as part of the permanent surveillance following the recent shootings last week. But when the suspect noticed the officers, he left immediately.

"The individual was acting suspiciously and was carrying a long weapon," said Sarah Frederickx, spokesperson for the Brussels-Midi police zone. "When he saw the police, he immediately fled."
