Deliberations on the 'Black Eagle' cocaine trial closed on Friday evening at the Brussels Criminal Court, with the judge announcing that the verdict will be delivered on 27 June at 9:30 a.m.

The trial involves 40 individuals accused of participating in widespread cocaine trafficking between 2018 and 2022.

Many of the accused made their final statements before the court began its consideration of the case, following six weeks of discussions.

One defendant, Paris D., launched an appeal: “I ask for forgiveness from the court and Belgian society,” he said.

Fellow defendant Alfonso U.M. said he “did not choose to be Colombian and live in Medellin," then added: "At 69, I would like to finish my life with my family.”

Me Mathieu Turbang, counsel for defendant Miguel C., requested the separation of his client’s case since he is also involved in another drug-trafficking trial, 'Encro.'

The 'Encro' trial, which has 129 defendants, lasted from 18 December 2023 to 7 May 2024 at Justitia in Haren.

A 10-year prison term is being sought for Miguel C. in the 'Encro' case, while a 6-year sentence has been suggested for his involvement in 'Black Eagle.'

Miguel’s lawyer objected to a double sentence for his client, calling for his case to be separated from the second lawsuit. He also wants Article 65 of the Penal Code to be applied.

His proposal would restrict the judge to issuing a single penalty for Miguel C., on the grounds that the offences in the two cases are similar and concurrent.
